October Research: ICMART 2024 Lecture

Hello, this is Dr. Hyocheong Chae, director of Sunyujae Korean Medicine Clinic in Dongcheon-dong, a place where kindness dwells.

This is the content of my lecture at the ICMART 2024 International Academic Conference. As the chief director of Sunyujae Korean Medicine Clinic, I gave a lecture at the ICMART 2024 International Academic Conference on the topic “Effectiveness and Safety of Acupotomy Treatment for Shoulder Pain: Analysis of a 25-Multicenter Retrospective Study.” The ICMART (International Council of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques) International Academic Conference is a gathering where acupuncture treatment specialists and researchers from around the world come together to share various research findings and treatment techniques. This year, too, many medical professionals and experts from all over the world participated and shared knowledge and skills related to Korean medicine and acupuncture treatment.

In my lecture, research results were presented on how effective and safe acupotomy treatment is for patients suffering from shoulder pain. This study was a multicenter retrospective study involving 25 hospitals, and its reliability was high due to the diverse clinical data it was based on. In particular, the explanation, supported by data, that acupotomy treatment is effective in alleviating shoulder pain and safe without side effects, attracted significant attention from many participants.

Through this presentation, for those with shoulder pain suffering patients and widely publicize the usefulness of acupotomy treatment. Sunyujae Korean Medicine Clinic will continue to research scientific and effective treatment methods and do its best for the healthy lives of its patients. The ICMART 2024 International Academic Conference, the academic general meeting of the International Council of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques (ICMART), was successfully held for the first time in East Asia, on Jeju Island, under the theme ‘The Future of Integrative Healthcare – The Convergence of Acupuncture, Medical Science, and Technology.’ This general meeting is regarded as an important occasion to confirm the international status of Korean medicine, as Korea was selected as the host country for the ICMART International Academic Conference for the first time in Asia.

At this academic general meeting, top experts in the fields of acupuncture and integrative medicine from around the world attended, and discussions and research presentations on acupuncture and related techniques were actively conducted. Furthermore, it was not limited to academic discussions; demonstrations of various clinical techniques took place, creating a practical venue for technological exchange. Dr. Hyocheong Chae, who served as the Planning Director and Academic Editorial Director of the Korean Acupotomy Medicine Society, attended as a lecturer on the topic ‘Effectiveness and Safety of Acupotomy Treatment on Shoulder Pain: Analysis of a 25 Multicenter Retrospective Study.’ This event saw over 1,100 doctors from 36 countries worldwide visit Korea to learn about the latest Korean medicine technologies, including acupuncture, and foreign doctors showed great interest in acupotomy treatment.

In addition, Korean medicine techniques such as ultrasound-guided acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and acupotomy treatment were introduced, demonstrating how Korean medicine is combined with scientific technology. Dr. Thomas Davis, who served as the President of ICMART, after participating in this academic general meeting, stated that he was impressed by Korea’s acupuncture and medical technologies, which are combined with modern scientific technology, after participating in ICMART 2024, and expressed his impression by saying, “The Korean medicine I encountered here is not merely traditional medicine; I believe it will play a leading role in the field of integrative medicine worldwide.”

The ICMART academic general meeting held on Jeju Island will be recorded as an important event that raised the international recognition of Korean medicine and presented the possibility for Korean medicine to develop globally through the convergence of tradition and modern science.
